This week, Heughan shared an adorable Instagram video that shows him seated alongside the 60-year-old McTavish to talk about their upcoming book, The Clanlands Almanac, which was officially announced last month (and serves as a sequel to their previous book, simply titled Clanands). However, while dishing about their upcoming project, the two best buds also claimed that they’re roomies as well! “We do live together now, don’t we?” Heughan said toward the end of their hilarious videos, which finds the friends riffing on everything from whisky and wine to gardens and hurricanes. McTavish replied, “We actually do. It’s very beautiful and we’re not ashamed to talk about it.” View this post on Instagram
A post shared by Sam Heughan (@samheughan) Whether or not they’re truly shacking up together, these two Scots definitely enjoy a bromantic BFF-ship for the ages. Keep reading to find out everything we know about Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish’s enviable friendship.
How did Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish become friends?
You can thank Outlander for the meeting of Sam and Graham. According to The Scotsman, “The two actors didn’t know each other before they started filming Outlander back in 2013. They met on-set and became close, mirroring the relationship of their on-screen characters.” During a joint interview earlier this year, McTavish told Stylist about his first impression of Heughan, “Sam was really warm, charming and supportive.” Heughan, of course, couldn’t help making fun of their first encounter. “Much like he did with this interview, Graham turned up late, out of breath, saying, ‘Oh god I’m so sorry,’” Heughan joked to the outlet. “That’s why I shook his hand; I’d been waiting so long for him.”
Are Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish related?
On Outlander, Heughan stars as Jamie Fraser, a Highland warrior circa 1743, while McTavish portrays Jamie’s maternal uncle, Dougal Mackenzie—a character who, indeed, is close to Jamie just as McTavish is close to Heughan in real life. However, there’s no real-world blood relation between the two actors.
Is Men in Kilts staged?
During the ongoing Outlander hiatus, notoriously known as Droughtlander, Heughan and McTavish co-starred in an entertaining, informative Starz travelogue series inspired by Outlander’s amazing filming locations called Men in Kilts. Learning all about the food, history, culture and terrain of their native Scotland was clearly a grand old time for the two bosom buddies—and no, there was nothing fake about neither the production nor Heughan and McTavish’s rapport. “Outlander is a wonderful show… but the truth about Scotland is so much more interesting, I think, and more exciting than anything that could be portrayed in any fiction,” McTavish said when Men in Kilts premiered back in February 2021. Heughan likewise said, “I love Scotland and I’ve obviously spent a lot of time here shooting Outlander. Along that period, I’ve seen some amazing, incredible places, experienced some great things and I kind of wanted to share it with everyone.” McTavish agreed: “Yeah I feel that too,” he replied. “You and I, we’ve got the same thirst for adventure as our characters.”
Where does Sam Heughan live?
As for whether it’s true that Heughan and McTavish are roommates, Heughan has said that he still lives in his native Scotland near Glasgow (though he’s also lived all around the UK, including in London and Edinburgh). Meanwhile, it’s been reported that McTavish relocated to New Zealand long ago with his wife and two daughters; in 2015, he told UK’s Daily Record, “I’ve been away from Scotland for decades. I’ve lived in Canada, England and Scotland before New Zealand.” However, over the recent Fourth of July holiday, he shared a video wishing his fans “across the Atlantic” a happy Independence Day, which would suggest that he’s currently back in the UK somewhere and not Down Under.
