The 45-year-old actress and producer recently opened up about her experience with gender inequality as a woman in the media. During the seventh annual Marie Claire Power Trip–a summit sponsored by Chase and United Airlines dedicated to encouraging influential women like Chastain, Jessica Alba, Carey Mulligan and Sydney Leroux to discuss the importance of adhering to personal priorities–Chastain was asked about her perspective of how far the industry has come in terms of inclusivity by reporters. Her response was nothing less than shocking. The actress admitted that, at times, she’s become frustrated with the industry for not taking her critiques and opinions as seriously as they do her male counterparts. So instead of letting a great idea go to waste, Chastain developed a strategy where she would find an actor willing to present her vision to the director in a very casual way. “I would have to, like, I had an idea of him; maybe I’d have to talk to the actor to get the actor to go to the director with the idea. So it felt like it was man to man,” she revealed. Chastain continued: “Yeah. And that’s how I would get my ideas implemented because I noticed the second I would go to the director, it was always, ‘No, no, no, no.’ But the second the actor will do it, he would listen.” While the actress didn’t call out any specific directors or projects, it’s clear the industry as a whole still has some work to do before talent is treated as equals.
