How to Make (Vegan) Fake Chicken
To make faux chicken, one of the original TikTokers (user @futurelettuce) only used flour and water and the internet literally went crazy. Then Chef Texy added her spin for her husband, getting fancy with some chopped-up bell peppers and a marinade of sorts, as you can see here: Here comes the key step though—she washes and rinses the dough, pulling and stretching it as it drains. Then she adds some flavorings and forms patties to cook in a pan with some oil and red and green peppers. What she is doing is using an ancient cooking technique to make something called seitan, which is made from wheat gluten and looks and tastes(?) like real meat. It’s made by washing the flour dough with water until all the starch granules have been removed. This leaves behind a sticky and insoluble gluten as an elastic mass that can be formed into any shape and cooked as a meat substitute. Want to see how her husband reacted?
